An inquiry conducted by The National Foot and Mouth Group concerning the 2001 outbreaks in the UK.

The discussions and developments in 2001 and 2002 resulted in significant progress in the European regulations on the strategy for Foot and Mouth Disease control.

A new policy on Foot and Mouth Disease control was accepted by the European Ministers of agriculture on 12/06/2003.

On September 12, 2002, David Byrne, European Commissioner for Animal Health and Food Safety, gave a speech for the Temporal EU FMD Committee. Emergency vaccination will move from a last resort to a first choice. Possibly emergency vaccination will become compulsory under certain circumstances.
