Efficacy of FMD vaccines
Key-factors, which determine efficacy of FMD vaccination are:
- Adjuvant:
- Double oil emulsion (DOE) induces a longer duration of immunity than ALSA.
- DOE is suitable for both ruminants as well as for swine, while ALSA is only suitable for ruminants.
- Antigen payload: There is a degree of correlation between the quantity of antigen and the efficacy. There is a ceiling in the quantity for this effect.
- Strain composition: There should be a good correlation between the vaccine strain and the isolated field virus.
- Program: The efficacy of the program depends on a lot of factors. Some of the most important:
- vaccination schedule
- vaccination density,
- vaccine storage and
- administration.
FMD vaccines of sufficient potency start to generate the first degree of protection after 2-3 days
