Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak, Britain 2001

In the last Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in Britain 2,030 cases of  FMD were reported between February and September 2001. Thousands of healthy animals were culled as a preventative measure. Many farmers were economically devastated and the public was bombarded with images of the mass slaughter of animals.

Full details of the outbreak can be found on the Defra website FMD cases 2001.

A report was published in July 2002:

In December 2004 the Royal Society published a review on the UK policy for FMD vaccination based on the above two reports. See the Royal Society website for the Follow-Up Review (pdf).

The information below covers the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in the Netherlands, between February and April 2001.

In this case emergency vaccination of in contact animals was carried out. These animals were later culled. The delayed culling of these animals allowed for a more organized culling and disposal process.
